This week the trend is nothing

Thoughts on filler content, YouTube Music, and new Vampire Weekend songs.

This week the trend is nothing

I started this newsletter because I wanted a place to let my mind wander a bit farther than normal about anything that’s on it each week. Almost always there’s something that sticks out and I linger on, for whatever reason. This week, not so much. There are a bunch of little things but nothing I want to dwell on for 500 words. (This week I’m trying Asics Nimbus Gel-25 running shoes and a new unreleased smartwatch, but I don’t have much to say about those, yet.)

I kinda thought I would have more, on-going thoughts about Bose’s new Ultra Open Earbuds, but I don’t. They sound surprisingly great for being open and are way more comfortable than I expected, but they aren’t good for times of isolation—obviously being “open.”

The point here is that I didn’t want any filler in This week the trend. If it’s not organically on my mind then I’m not spending time to write about it. These up-front topics are meant to be things I’m more enthusiastic about. Until next week, there are some interesting links and blurbs below. You should keep reading.

Other things I’m thinking about this week

I’ve tried YouTube Music in passing, but I’m finally giving it a legitimate go at the moment. With only a week under my belt there definitely some neat things, like being able to switch from the song to the video and back again while the song continues to play—no break in the action. But I’ve also come across some frustrating details like when I accidentally tapped on a song I didn’t want to play and my up-next queue disappeared after I just added 8 or 9 tracks to it.

YouTube Music doesn’t feel like a more traditional streaming music service like Spotify or Apple Music, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I think I’ll have more thoughts on it in a couple more weeks.

Music

There are two new Vampire Weekend songs out. I like them, but they also sound like they also don’t sound particularly “new.”

There’s also a new Maya Hawke song. Her album, Moss was particularly good and I can’t wait for the new album, Chaos Angel.

Movies

You Hurt My Feelings was a low-stakes movie that was funny enough to be worth its 93-minute runtime.

  • Here’s my review of the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds. They are really great for all-day use and running, or both. Their prices problem is probably price and since they don’t do isolation it might be hard for this to be the only pair of earbuds you buy.
  • The Nomad Magnetic Leather Back is a partial case that’s particularly great for anyone who doesn’t really want a case. I also included a short Q&A with the company about making iPhone accessories.
  • Stable Audio is AI-generated ambient music that does a fine job.
  • Apple Music has two new personalized radio stations, one around love and another around heartbreak.

I wrote, edited, and posted this newsletter all inside a Vision Pro. I needed a physical keyboard and trackpad, but it worked. I listened to YouTube Music in Safari at the same time. I even created the post image at the top in Microsoft Designer and uploaded it in the headset. My month-long review of the Vision Pro will be ready at the beginning of March.
